While visiting with some friends, I observed the father talking with his daughter while playing with pegs. The two-year old was putting pegs in a peg board and the father was asking her to name the colors. After a few times he started asking her to put specific colors in the boards and she complied. A minute or two later, the father stood up and walked away, leaving his daughter playing alone.
Although I think it's great that the father was engaged in teaching his daughter colors, I do not think the communication was very effective. The father should have asked his daughter questions that could have led to further discussion. For example, he could have asked her what the pegs reminded her of or to tell him about what she was working on.
Hi Sarah,
ReplyDeleteThe father probably did not know how to have an active conversation with a child at this young age. I find that a lot of people have a hard time figuring out how to talk to young children.
