Talking with others about culture and diveristy

What is culture?
KB:  Culture is how you see and interact with the world around you.
MR: A set of social norms particular to a group of people.
HN: your heritage and how you express it through art and music and everyday life.

What is diversity?
KB: Diversity is change to the world around you.  That’s why it makes people uncomfortable, people don’t like change.
MR: A society comprised on people with different cultural identities.
HN: different cultures and races mixed together.

Talking with these three people about culture and diversity helped me to realize that how we view culture and diversity is shaped by our culture.  For instance, MR, who is a college educated professional through about his answer for a few minutes and then came up with a definition sounding answer.

  1. I also got similar responses from the people I spoke to. It seems like most people do not understand the complexity of culture and diversity. Culture and diversity involves so much more than ethnicity as we have learned from this class. I feel like I am beginning to understand the complexities involved with diversity and culture even after three weeks of this course.

  2. Sarah,
I do agree that the response we recieved all varied based on the interver's culutre. I feel that culutre is a never ending term that can not just be defined by one viewpoint. I enjoyed reading your post.

  3. Sarah,
I thought that KB’s definition of diversity was interesting. When I first read it I sat back a tried to relate to that he/she was saying. I can appreciate the part about people not liking change. I am one who often times will stay in my comfort zone in an effort to avoid change. On the other hand, I respect and celebrate other cultures. I don’t think that it makes me uncomfortable, although I haven’t been in many situations where I am not part of the dominant culture. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
