Nonverbal Communication

I chose to watch New Girl for this assignment.  By watching the show muted, I discovered that the show is about four roommates.  I noticed that watching the show muted altered how I focused my attention.  I was concentrating more on the actors' eyes than what was going on around them.  By watching their eyes I was able to discern the emotion of the speaker and then could attempt to piece together the plot of the show.  While watching the show a second time, this time with the sound on, I was able to pay attention to the actors' surroundings as well.  For most of the episode, my assumptions about the plot were accurate.  The only parts where I had trouble were when the characters employed deceptive facial cues as is common when being sarcastic or joking.

  1. Sarah,

I agree it was hard to focus on what was going on in the programs but more of how the actor's were responding to each other. I really paid close attention to the body language among the group on the show I watched and could tell a lot from this.

  2. When I watched the T.V. show on mute it was very hard for me to focus. My sister was on the phone in the other room and I found myself focused on her conversation as I watched the characters in the show. I try to focus on the changing of scenary as well as the facial expressions. I was much better focused as I watched the show with the sound on.

  3. I agree, I worked so much harder to interpret what they were saying through their eyes and body language. In some ways I understand the character's feelings better. If I was to pay as close of attention when they were speaking I would be far more cued in to their message.
